NTACC Paediatrics

OVERVIEW

The Nurse Trauma and Critical Care (NTACC) Paediatrics Course is the first of its kind, providing candidates with the knowledge and practical skills to meet the requirements of the Emergency Department Paediatric Level 2 competencies set out by the National Major Trauma Nursing Group (2024). It is the first trauma course designed specifically for nurses working with children.
NTACC Paediatrics is a two-day immersive course that encompasses the ATACC style, building from a simple standard approach, which can be adopted for every trauma call, through a set of progressively more complex or specialised scenarios, which cover all aspects of trauma care within a modern trauma system.

COURSE SUMMARY

Our Nurse Trauma and Critical Care for Paediatrics Course, is the first of its kind within the UK. Recognising the huge need for trauma training in children, The ATACC Groups Nurse Lead Harriet Lawrance, supported by nurses from Alder Hey’s Emergency Department and The ATACC Groups Faculty, have designed the course to effectively equip candidates to manage complex paediatric emergencies. Delivered over 2 days, it was specifically written to meet the requirements of the Emergency Department Level 2 Paediatric competencies set out by the National Major Trauma Nursing Group (2024).

NTACC Paeds was written specifically for nurses, by nurses. The NTACC Paeds course is different from other ‘life support’ or ‘Trauma’ courses as we believe it offers nurses an innovative and interactive approach to knowledge translation. At NTACC Paeds, we have removed the traditional element of didactic lectures and replaced them with fully immersive, realistic and carefully tailored trauma scenarios supported by blast talks and skills stations. Through the use of ‘live’ actors our course is as realistic and immersive as can be. This allows the candidate to directly apply what they learn within NTACC Paeds to their everyday working lives.  The course has been specifically written so that it can be delivered in situ, in a real resus room, in an immersive suite or in a simulation centre.

The course builds from the ‘standard routine’ of preparing and receiving a major trauma patient and then the scenarios build in complexity through to major polytrauma, maintaining a complete nursing focus throughout. The candidate manual was written for prior learning and reference before the course and is a concise, bespoke document which consists of a range of chapters detailing specific topics related to the role of the nurse in trauma care. This document also provides an overview of the equipment used and a description of the NTACC Paeds approach to trauma care.

Accreditation is valid for four years and those who perform exceptionally well, will be invited back as Instructor candidates, with the potential to become NTACC instructors themselves.

COURSE FAQ

NTACC Paeds aims to equip nurses and HCP working in emergency departments or trauma settings, with the necessary skills and competencies to successfully manage a major trauma patient and meet the Emergency Department Level 2 Competencies for Paediatrics set by the National Major Trauma Nursing Group (2024).

There are no official pre-requisites for this qualification; however, we recommend learners should have had 2 years post registration experience in a role that deals with trauma. It is open to any members of the MDT who work in a trauma setting including ODPs and other health care practitioners.

As NTACC Paeds is a Level 2 Trauma course, candidates should ideally have completed Level 1 prior to attendance.

Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods.

Due to the nature of this qualification, candidates should be physically capable of undertaking practical assessments in a range of environments.

To successfully complete the course, each candidate is required to actively engage in scenarios, demonstrating skill in all allocated roles, pass a series of skills stations and scenario-based assessments as well as a summative multiple-choice examination.

To successfully complete the course, each candidate is required to actively engage in scenarios, demonstrating skill in all allocated roles, pass a series of skills stations and scenario-based assessments as well as a summative multiple-choice examination.

The course is designed to be delivered through high fidelity simulation and training in a unique and motivational style that is easy to follow and understand. We have been involved in emergency care training for almost 25 years and feel it is important to truly immerse candidates into a scenario. Using live actors helps bring a scenario to life and applies pressure to partly replicate the reality of dealing with critically injured casualties. NTACC Paeds uses actors in a range of roles to replicate those involved in trauma scenarios.
