COURSE SUMMARY

Our Nurse Trauma and Critical Care course, NTACC, is the only dedicated Nursing trauma course fully accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Delivered over 2 days, it was specifically written to meet the requirements of a Level 1 and 2 Trauma Nurse competencies and has already been adopted by a number of Major Trauma Centres and Major Trauma Networks across the UK.

NTACC was written specifically for nurses, by nurses supported by ATACC’s medical director Dr Mark Forrest.
The NTACC course is different from other life support or trauma courses as we believe it offers nurses an innovative and interactive approach to knowledge translation.
At NTACC, we have removed the element of didactic lectures and replaced them with fully immersive, realistic and carefully tailored trauma scenarios supported by blast talks and skills stations. Through the use of live actors our course is as realistic and immersive as can be. This allows the candidate to directly apply what they learn within NTACC to their everyday working lives. NTACC is in our decdicated Emergency Department at our Training Cebtre in Lancashire but has been written so that it can be delivered in situ, in a real resus room or in a simulation centre.
The course builds from the ‘standard routine’ of preparing and receiving a major trauma patient, followed by scenarios which build in complexity culminating in the management of major polytrauma, maintaining a complete nursing focus throughout. The candidate manual was written for prior learning and reference before the course and is a concise, bespoke document which consists of a range of chapters detailing specific topics related to the role of the nurse in trauma care. This document also provides an overview of the equipment used and a description of the NTACC approach to trauma care.
Accreditation is valid for four years and those who perform exceptionally well, will be invited back as Instructor candidates, with the potential to become NTACC instructors themselves.

COURSE FAQ

NTACC aims to equip nurses working in emergency departments with the necessary skills and competencies to successfully manage a major trauma patient and meet the Emergency Department Level 2 Competencies.

There are no official pre-requisites for this qualification; however, we recommend learners should have had 2 years post registration experience in a role that deals with trauma. It is open to any members of the MDT who work in a trauma setting including ODPs and other health care practitioners.

As NTACC is a Level 2 Trauma course, candidates should ideally have completed Level 1 prior to attendance.

Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods.

Due to the nature of this qualification, candidates should be physically capable of undertaking practical assessments in a range of environments.

The NTACC course is accredited and recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England). The NTACC course is clinically underwritten by suitably qualified Critical Care Doctors and Prehospital Care Clinicians provided by The ATACC Group and the wider ATACC Faculty and backed by the expert Medical Advisory Group.

To successfully complete the course, each candidate is required to actively engage in scenarios, demonstrating skill in all allocated roles, pass a series of skills stations and scenario-based assessments as well as a summative multiple-choice examination.

The course is designed to be delivered through high fidelity simulation and training in a unique and motivational style that is easy to follow and understand. We have been involved in emergency care training for almost 25 years and feel it is important to truly immerse candidates into a scenario. Using live actors helps bring a scenario to life and applies pressure to partly replicate the reality of dealing with critically injured casualties.
