Clinical Governance for the Police implements a systematic process to maintain and improve the quality, effectiveness and safety of casualty care.
It forms a fundamental part of the College of Policing First Aid recommendations.
WHAT IS CLINICAL GOVERNANCE?
Effective Clinical Governance is an active quality assurance process within an organisation and the College of Policing has stated that First Aid programmes should have the provision of Clinical Governance. The specific requirements for this are not clearly defined, but The ATACC Group have extensive experience with the Police, NHS and other emergency services and holds the national framework for First Aid training delivery and Clinical Governance for the Police.
This has included guidance and provision of training, establishing Governance processes and meetings but also clinical service and equipment reviews, hot debriefs, communication with hospitals and Trauma networks and support after recent terrorist events.
Clinical Governance is embedded in all aspects of first aid and casualty care, to ensure that appropriate risk assessments are made, training requirements are met, it is relevant and delivered to the required standards with equipment that is fit for purpose.
It also involves ongoing audit processes to monitor and review the safety and effectiveness of policies, training and equipment. This includes a monthly review of every casualty intervention, to help define further training needs and the future strategic direction of the Police first aid support.
Clinical Governance also provides an essential route for reviewing incidents, deaths and any areas of concern.
Identified learning can then be fed back through the process to the relevant parties or back to senior management teams for consideration of any recommended changes.
Implemented correctly, Clinical Governance can positively impact on all areas of an organisation not only achieving its aim of continued improvement in casualty care, but also by greatly increasing the confidence of your force attending the public with injuries and life-threatening problems.
